Knightsbridge is one of London's wealthiest and most fashionable areas, and it has a very bizarre name.
Home to some of the most luxurious hotels in London and the famous Harrods, Knightsbridge is one of the most expensive areas of London. But why is it called Knightsbridge? There are no rivers and bridges, and I definitely haven't seen any knights here.
Knightsbridge wasn't always as nice and posh as we know it today. In fact, it was one of the most dangerous areas of the city.
Before the 19th century, the area had a terrible reputation, known as the haunt of highwaymen and robbers targeting travelers on the western route out of London.
Centuries before that, this area was a no man's land between the villages of Chelsea, Kensington, and Charing. It was only known for the bridge over the Westbourne River on the road between London and Kensington. The bridge was used by knights going to London to receive blessing from the Bishop of London.
According to the legend, two knights had an argument when crossing this bridge. Just like most of the arguments in medieval England, it turned into a combat, watched by the other knights from the riverbanks. The fighters eventually both fell into the river, and the area was called Knightsbridge since then.
