London will get 600 new skyscrapers

London can get 600 new skyscrapers. The capital could soon be transformed into Manhattan-on-Thames.

Central London could be taken over with hi-rise buildings over the next few years, according to research done by New London Architecture.

For decades, London had fewer tall buildings than other major cities, partly because Londoners usually are against it and because of rules like the 1938 policy that protected the sightlines of St Paul’s Cathedral.

But according to this new report, this can change in the next few years. New London Architecture think tank claims that London currently has 583 skyscraper projects queuing up in the pipeline, due to be constructed in the next ten years. The report declares that London can soon become “Manhattan-on-Thames.”

For comparison, only 270 high-rise buildings were constructed in London over the last 10 years.

The report says this change is mainly fuelled by rising demand for office and residential space, overseas investment, and a supportive planning environment.

And also because London population is expected to reach 10 million by 2030.
